As the nights get longer, many of us are considering headlight replacement as they seem to keep getting dimmer. Before going to this extreme, you may want to take a quick look and see if they can be freshened up a bit first. Headlight restoration may save you a bundle of cash.
Years back, headlights were made from glass which was heavy, easy to brake and had some limitations when it came to shaping them. With the continuous changes in vehicle design, this wasn’t very practical so they switched to plastic and haven’t looked back.
Along with the advantages plastic brings to the table, there are some negative side affects we need to deal with. Chief among them is their tendency to “cloud” over time.
This clouding is caused by oxidation and exposure to the elements, including UV from the sun. Fortunately, bringing clarity back to your headlights is relatively simple and can be done with some basic tools, time and a headlight repair kit from your local auto part store. You can even find them in many grocery stores.
Generally, the kit comes with a paste (similar to toothpaste) and an applicator. The applicator can be used by hand, but is best used attached to a power drill. Just follow the kits instructions and before you know it, your headlights will be looking like new again and lighting your way down darkened roads.
If this is not something you are comfortable doing yourself, give Leslie a call at 541-757-7042 and he’ll be glad to set you up with a solution. Oh, and while you are at it don’t forget your windshield wipers, another important winter visibility issue.
