Is there anything I can do to prevent a broken timing belt? My friend just spent a lot of money repairing his engine when his timing belt broke.
Bob’s Auto & Towing Answer:
Unfortunately, the best way to prevent a broken timing belt is to replace it according to the manufacturers recommendation. Timing belts have a pretty important and specific use, and if they are not working correctly or break, your engine can be destroyed.
When your engine is running the timing belt ensures the camshaft turns at just the right speed as they open and close. This not only helps the engine run smoothly, but on some engines it prevents the valves from getting hit by the movement of the pistons. If the timing is off enough your engine is toast.
Because the timing is so important, the useful lifespan of the timing belt is limited. As it ages it can slip or break which is when the greatest damage to your engine can happen. To prevent this, make sure to plan ahead for timing belt replacement. Generally, the lifespan is 60,000 to 90,000 miles.
It’s also important to know that replacing a timing belt is a lot of work. Due to its location, several different things need to be removed and then replaced when done. So make sure to plan ahead for timing belt replacement.
If you are not sure when your timing belt is due for replacement, give our service department a call. They can answer any questions you may have and set up an appointment if necessary. Remember, it’s a good idea to plan ahead for this type of job. Waiting until your timing belt breaks could be an expensive decision.
