I’ve got to replace my water pump and it costs more than it used to. Why has the price gone up so much?
Bob’s Auto & Towing Answer:
If I had to guess, I’d say you have a car with a timing belt driven water pump. This means there is extra work involved to replace it compared to a serpentine belt driven water pump. With a serpentine belt driven water pump, everything is bolted on in an easily accessible location.
Water pumps circulate coolants from around the engine into the radiator to help cool the engine. It’s a fairly simple system, but like anything will eventually wear out. You can have your cooling system serviced here at Bob’s Auto & Towing to help lengthen its life, but eventually it will fail and need replaced.
Cars with timing belt driven water pumps require more work because the water pump is attached to the engine block. The serpentine belt and other accessories are located over the timing belts protective cover. This needs to be accessed when repairing your water pump.
Because of this, these items need removed and then replaced again when servicing your water pump.
While we are in here, it’s good to remember your timing belt has a pretty specific schedule for changing as well. This means it’s usually a good idea to replace your timing belt, tensioner and pulleys at the same time.
And if your timing belt goes out first? It’s a good idea to replace your water pump and related parts now too. It’ll cost you a little more up front, but you will save money in the long run. No sense paying to have all that work done twice.
